Breedon joins the shut-down

26 Mar 20 Breedon, a leading supplier of heavy construction materials, has decided to suspend production at all of its UK sites except those serving critical supply needs.

Breedon said that the decision to close most of its operations was taken 鈥渢o ensure the safety and wellbeing of our colleagues, subcontractors, customers and communities鈥 in light of the government鈥檚 lockdown this week.

Among the exceptions is the Hope cement plant in Derbyshire.

Breedon鈥檚 operations in the Republic of Ireland, however, including its cement plant at Kinnegad, continue to operate pending further guidance from the Irish government.

Breedon also revealed that the Covid-19 crisis had meant delay to the completion of certain Cemex assets. In January Breedon agreed to pay Cemex 拢178m for 100 of its UK operations, including 49 ready-mix plants, 28 aggregate quarries, four depots, one cement terminal, 14 asphalt plants and four concrete products operations.

鈥淐ompletion of our acquisition of certain of Cemex's UK assets remains subject to satisfactory conditions being met, including a TUPE consultation and IT migration,鈥 Breddon said today. 鈥淚n light of Covid-19, completion may take longer than originally anticipated.聽 We continue to believe that these well-located, resource-backed assets will enable us over time to create significant additional value for shareholders.鈥
