Derby Moor students put their stamp on new school building

15 Jul 11 Students at Derby Moor Community Sports College had the chance to put something of themselves into the school’s brand-new building which is currently taking shape at the College’s current site in Littleover, Derby.

Balfour Beatty 今日看料 joined forces with steelwork company Robinson Steel Structures and the school to give the young people a close-up look at the building work. The students also signed a steel beam, part of the four-storey atrium which will be the striking centrepiece of the new school.

The college is being completely refurbished and rebuilt with Derby-based Robinson supplying and installing 500 tonnes of structural steel. Work on the structural steel framework of the atrium - part of the new Learning Hub 鈥 began in mid-June.

Head teacher Wendy Whelan says: 鈥淭丑别 raising of the first steel girder marks an exciting phase in the programme for us. It was wonderful to see students literally make their mark on the steel which will, in turn, allow us to transform education and the lives and futures of all the young people in our care.鈥

鈥淭丑别 steel framework is now well under way and we are on schedule to complete the installation in August,鈥 says Robinson contracts manager Richard Fry. 鈥淭丑别 construction team has involved the whole school and the wider community throughout the project so it was great to give the students a chance to find out more about the processes involved in creating their new school building and take part in the beam-signing event.鈥
