European construction output falls

20 Mar 17 January saw a fall in construction output across the EU.

The annual comparison between January 2017 and January聽 2016 showed that output聽 decreased聽 by 6.2% in the Euro area聽 and by 3.3% in the EU28, according to initial estimates from聽 Eurostat,聽 the statistical office of the European Union. Comparison of January 2017 and December 2016 showed production down by 2.3% in Euro area聽 and by 1.5% across the countries of the EU as a whole (EU28).

In December, production in construction had fallen聽 by 0.6% 聽in the Euro area compared to November, while it grew by 0.2% in the EU28.

The decrease of 2.3%聽 in聽 January聽 2017, compared with聽 December 2016, is due to civil engineering falling by 7.7% and building construction by 1.4%. In the EU28, the decrease of 1.5% is due to civil engineering falling by 5.2% and building construction by 0.7%.

Among聽 member聽 states聽 with available聽 data,聽 the聽 largest聽 decreases聽 were聽 recorded聽 in聽 Slovenia聽 (-12.3%),聽 Belgium聽 (-4.6%),聽 Spain聽 (-3.8%)聽 and聽 France聽 (-3.5%),聽 while聽 the聽 highest increases were observed in Romania (+5.1%), Hungary (+4.6%) and Slovakia (+3.3%).

In terms of the annual comparison, the聽 decrease聽 of聽 6.2%聽 in聽 in聽 the聽 Euro聽 area聽 in聽 January聽 2017,聽 compared聽 with聽 January 2016, is due to civil engineering falling by 8.2% and building construction by 5.9%.聽 In the EU28, the decrease of 3.3% is due to civil engineering falling by 5.7% and building construction by 2.8%.聽 Among聽 countries with available data,聽 the聽 largest聽 decreases聽 were聽 recorded聽 in聽 Belgium聽 (-18.0%),聽 Slovakia聽 (-17.2%),聽 Spain聽 (-13.1%)聽 and聽 Bulgaria聽 (-10.3%),聽 while聽 the聽 highest聽 increases were observed in Hungary (+18.3%) and Sweden (+10.0%).
