Wolverhampton bus station open for business

12 Sep 11 Wolverhampton's new £22.5 million bus station, the busiest in the West Midlands, has opened on time and on budget after 15 months of development work.

Leading multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy, Hilson Moran was appointed as Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) and public health engineers in this first phase of the much larger 拢174 million Wolverhampton Interchange Scheme by developers, Neptune.聽

The redevelopment has seen major contractors Bam 今日看料 deliver a state of the art, two-storey building, for Centro, the integrated passenger transport authority for the West Midlands. There is a travel centre on the ground floor, a Network West Midlands section and retail units on the ground and first floors. It has also undertaken the refurbishment to the existing landmark Queen鈥檚 Building.

The new building has been partly let to Sainsbury鈥檚 to create one of its Local brands of mini supermarkets. It will also be home to the Unite trade union and to a National Express West Midlands travel shop.

Simon Ramsden, Hilson Moran鈥檚 Divisional Director, based in Manchester, who led the engineering project team, said: 鈥淭his scheme, which is a gateway project for the city, is key to Wolverhampton鈥檚 growth. We are proud to have helped contribute to the regeneration of the city centre by improving the transportation infrastructure for the people of Wolverhampton鈥.聽

Delivering a sustainable building using natural materials such as granite and glass were key design initiatives set out by architects, Austin Smith Lord. 聽Hilson Moran is currently appointed as BREEAM assessor of the scheme to certify its sustainability rating, which should be released over the coming months.
